Where does the SRT format come from?

SRT stands for SubRip Text. The format originated from SubRip, a subtitle extraction tool created around 1999-2000 for extracting subtitles from DVD videos. SubRip used OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to read subtitle images from DVDs and convert them into plain text subtitle files with timing information.

Those files became known as SRT files and eventually became one of the most widely supported subtitle formats on the internet. Today, SRT files are supported by platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, VLC Media Player and many subtitle editors, including Flixlar.
